Review:

Time to hit the trail again as Billy Crystal cashing in on the success -sorry- saddles up once more as Mitch Robbins the intrepid cowboy wannabe who first rode into the sunset in "City Slickers" and is back in this rather less than imaginatively titled sequel.

This time it's not the midlife crisis that inspires the plot but a treasure map found hidden in the band of Curly's (remember Curly? Fearsome cowboy from the original) hat. Mitch and good buddy Phil (Daniel Stern) get one whiff of the word "Gold" and decide to try and follow the directions to certain fame and fortune, what they didn't reckon on was the company of Mitch's brother (Jon Lovitz) and the reappearance of Curly... or is it?

City Slickers II contains much of what made the original so successful. Crystal is endearingly nutty and Lovitz is finally given the opportunity to star in a film that people will have actually heard of! Jack Palance puts in another star turn as a far grizzlier cowboy who has a decidedly hidden agenda and even Norman the calf is back!

Male bonding, stampedes and of course the obligatory bad guys all make for a sequel that, while not being quite as funny as the original, does have plenty to recommend in it.

Caroline Smith.
