Review:

In a display of classic romcom cinema, 27 Dresses is the perfect early 2000s American chick-flick. Jane (Katherine Heigl) seems to always be a bridesmaid, never the bride, and after 27 different weddings it’s time for her sister to get married. The only catch is that the groom is Jane’s boss… and her long and unrequited crush.

Whilst navigating the wedding scene, Jane meets a journalist, Kevin (James Marsden), who soon begins working on an article about Jane and her 27 different bridesmaid dresses. A fun and predictable film, 27 Dresses is an easy and heartening watch for the girls, the gays, and their boyfriends.

Jane Nichols is the serial bridesmaid with twenty-seven dresses to her name. When her little sister announces her engagement to the man Jane has spent years secretly longing for, she begins to evaluate her own life and whether or not she can bare to stand by her ungrateful and conniving sister’s side. However, the intervention of a cynical journalist, in the form of the easy-on-the-eye James Marsden, proves to add another complication to her crisis. Marsden plays the keen journalist longing for a place in a more respectable column of his newspaper, not content with his role as the wedding reporter. After noticing Jane’s dedication to the role of bridesmaid (seeing her switch between two weddings in one night) he offers his editor a feature on the supposedly obsessive woman in the hope it will get him the promotion he longs for.

For Jane, her obvious crush on ignorant boss, George, is thwarted when just as she gets the courage to act her supermodel sister comes back from Milan and makes a move on him. It goes from bad to worse when a wedding is announced, and her sister chooses to steal away all of Jane’s hopes and dreams she was saving for her own perfect wedding.

When she starts doubting her sister’s intentions she is torn between family loyalty and the man she loves. However, though she makes a stand for what she believes is right, she finds that the man she was chasing is perhaps not the true man of her dreams. The fairy-tale ending is further complicated by Marsden’s work and all is nearly lost. Will they or won’t they?

This is a heart-warming, and at times emotionally frustrating film, with Jane’s plight hitting more than a few nerves (especially for those spurned lovers out there!). With top-notch eye candy of the boy and girl variety, a few plot twists and a lot of pretty dresses, this film is the epitome of the classic rom-com that is sure to please.
