Minutes of the Warwick Student Cinema (WSC) Fundraising meeting held on 16th May 2019

2. Presentation From AP
Running costs for the year roughly £6000.
Current account balance roughly £40,000.
Need roughly £40,000
Need to account for total films costs for three terms, total yearly cost of publicity (maybe don’t have the booklets first term), how much is out average profit per year (for the SU to know how long it’ll take for us to pay them back should we loan from them?). Can’t plunge ourselves into too much debt because we will need to get a new projector in 10 years. £20K more for a laser project, but could be good because servicing costs will be negligible (with non-laser, likely to be 2K plus every two years) – Increased costs offset by TCO benefits.

Funding Level 1
Could apply for Emergency funds, £5-£10K
Disbursement Funs, £10K – need socs rep/culture rep support
Crowdfunding – Just Giving and Spark, these depend on alumni to give donations (£10-20K), £8K raised for Warwick Racing easily from this. Could be done due to how many alumni we have.

Funding Level 2
National Lottery – Small grants fund
Warwick SU – Unlimited loan, but we need to pay it back and save before the next projector will need to be brought, without bankrupting the society.
Could make Warwick SU Part Owner (maybe £5-10K)- depends on SU board of the directors though
BFI? Cinema for All? Independent Cinema Office?
Will Hay Appreciation Society – Karen Steve Godwin etc will likely to be more than willing to help.
Try to get sponsorship, very hard though because we haven’t got sponsorship now
FilmSoc Alumni is the key to this, crowdfunding to be set up by the end of term to allow them to do donate. People have already contacting AP asking how to donate
Need to set a date for this all to be started by (Maybe next couple of weeks, before week 7), need to make sure all crowdfunding routes are set up before we announce that we need help publicly etc.
IATL funds?
Crowdfunding either likely to go very well or very poorly, needs to be advertised massively (Will Hay Society), reach out to historic alumni emails, get peoples email addresses from the SU (Try get this sent round to everyone that’s ever been a member of FilmSoc since 2001). Need a huge social media push etc. Try get us included on MyAdvantage email/newsletter. Maybe staff? Local counsel/authority?? KH – Coventry telegraph, get Rolf to tweet about us. Website to try and promote this, flyers etc to get the word out around campus

Who are we? - easy
Our Story – needs to be really emotive
Where will the money go? – easy

Other Ideas
Collection buckets at the outdoor screening of Mamma Mia, marketing officer to make slides for the big screening, have it up hours before the event.
Sell confectionary etc at screenings
Once we get the money, we need account to be emptied, otherwise SU will be very angry
Ideas for funding seem to be the main issues
We need loads of advertising, because this attracts funding sources
Give gifts for donating certain amounts of money
Maybe have sell proj box related stuff (make and project your own film, proj box tour)
Get rid of £1000 options as people won’t want rewards for this, also be able to select how much you want to donate as large donors will want to be anonymous
We will be selling our old projector
WSC canvas bag, pin badge for crowdfunding gift
Discourse is horrible proj technology

Need SOS to be together with WSC so that people understand it’s the cinema not that’s it’s for the society
Need to design harry potter style “WSC Supporter” 35mm strip
Use discourse to brainstorm ideas for “gifts”
Write the fluff needed for the crowd funding page descriptions etc
Get will hay society, tommy wiseau, Edgar wright, Simon mayo, ali plumb, prince Charles, cinema for all, JK Rowling, any more famous alumni or people we’ve helped that can get us out there and publicise us
Get Reece to write a piece for the boar about fundraising, maybe the front page of the boar
Ask societies that we have collaborated with to try and advertise us/put us out there
